Cusco to Hydroelectric: getting to Machu Picchu by road

Short answer: the Hydroelectric station (Hidroeléctrica) is about 200–220 km from Cusco, around 6 hours by road via Abra Málaga, Santa María and Santa Teresa. From there you hike about 2.5–3 hours along the railway to Aguas Calientes, or take the train. Go by shared bus/van (budget) or by private car from US$157 (S/ 550) per vehicle.

The route, step by step

  1. Cusco → Abra Málaga: the road climbs above 4,000 m with views of snowy peaks.
  2. Down to Santa María and Santa Teresa: from the Andes to the cloud forest. Lots of curves; bring something for motion sickness.
  3. Santa Teresa → Hydroelectric: final stretch to the station.
  4. Hydroelectric → Aguas Calientes: about 2.5–3 hours on foot along the tracks, or by train.
