Discover the majestic Inca construction of Waqrapukara, or “Horn-Shaped Fortress,” located above the canyon of the powerful Apurímac River. This hidden gem offers an unforgettable experience for travelers seeking something unique and less crowded. This sacred site beautifully combines impressive stonework with spectacular natural formations and small surrounding lagoons.
“Waqra” means “horn” in Quechua, and “Pukara” means “fortress.” The “horns” rise to 4,300 meters above sea level, perched atop a dramatic cliff covered with vegetation and overlooking the deep canyon of the Apurímac River. The archaeological monument is surrounded by impressive terraces, plazas, and striking rock formations that resemble thrones, evoking mythical giants watching over the Andean landscape.
This day requires an early departure at 5:00 a.m. for a bus journey to the district of Acomayo, continuing until reaching Cocha (4,000 m / 13,123 ft), where a 2.5-hour hike to Waqrapukara begins. The terrain is rugged, featuring incredible natural rock formations and small lagoons, where you may observe local wildlife such as condors, llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, wild horses, and ducks.
During the hike, you will encounter a wide variety of flora and fauna typical of the region before arriving at Waqrapukara. Once there, you will enjoy a guided tour visiting key sites such as Intipunku (Sun Gate), the main plaza, towers, terraces, the Temple of Wiracocha, and rock paintings depicting llamas.
The archaeological complex stretches along a rocky ridge, built around two horn-shaped mountain peaks. The site features eight Inca terraces with retaining walls and stone stairways.
The return hike takes approximately 3 hours along an ancient trail to the village of Waqui, where your private transportation will be waiting to take you back to the city of Cusco.
