Short answer: Corpus Christi is Cusco’s great religious festival. It is a moveable feast held on the Thursday 60 days after Easter Sunday, so in 2027 it falls on Thursday 27 May (confirm the exact programme locally). Saints and virgins are carried from their parish churches to the Cathedral, paraded around the Plaza de Armas on the Thursday and taken home again at the Octava about a week later. Expect big crowds, road closures and plenty of chiriuchu, and book transport early: a private Cusco airport transfer to your hotel costs from US$10 (S/ 35) per vehicle.
What Corpus Christi in Cusco is
Corpus Christi is a Catholic feast celebrating the Eucharist, observed around the world, but Cusco gives it a character of its own. It arrived in colonial times and blended with Andean tradition here: many historians link it to the old ceremonies in which the mummies of Inca rulers were carried in procession. Today it is, together with Inti Raymi, the most important date in Cusco’s calendar.
The heart of it is the images. Traditionally 15 saints and virgins leave their parish churches, in neighbourhoods such as San Blas, Santiago and Belén and nearby districts such as San Sebastián, and gather at the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas. Each image has its own brotherhood, bearers and devotees, who spend months preparing its robes, jewellery and litter.
When is Corpus Christi in Cusco in 2027?
Because it depends on the date of Easter, Corpus Christi moves every year and can land anywhere from late May to late June. The rule is simple: the Thursday 60 days after Easter Sunday.
| Year | Easter Sunday | Corpus Christi Thursday | Octava (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 5 April | 4 June | About a week later |
| 2027 | 28 March | 27 May | Around 3 June |
| 2028 | 16 April | 15 June | About a week later |
Event times change from year to year, so check them in Cusco a few days before, or ask us on WhatsApp when you book.
How the festival unfolds, day by day
Before the Thursday: the saints arrive
In the days leading up to the feast, each image leaves its church and is carried on its litter to the Cathedral, escorted by its neighbourhood. It is a good chance to see a procession with smaller crowds than on the main day.
Corpus Christi Thursday: the great procession
This is the main event. The images come out of the Cathedral and circle the Plaza de Armas in procession, together with the Blessed Sacrament, carried by their devotees and accompanied by music. The square and the surrounding streets fill up early, and the mood mixes devotion, food and celebration all day long.
A week in the Cathedral
After the procession the saints and virgins stay in the Cathedral for about a week. If you want to see them up close and calmly, this is the time: visit on a weekday, dressed respectfully and quietly.
The Octava: the return to the parishes
About a week later comes the Octava, when the images are carried back to their churches. It is calmer than the Thursday and very authentic, because it is mostly the residents of each neighbourhood who walk with them.
Chiriuchu: the dish of Corpus Christi
Chiriuchu is the signature food of the festival. The name is Quechua, from chiri (cold) and uchu (chilli), because it is served cold and made above all for these days. It is a generous plate bringing together produce from the highlands, the coast and the jungle:
- Roast cuy (guinea pig) and hen or chicken.
- Sausage and other cured meats.
- Fresh cheese.
- Cochayuyo (seaweed) and fish roe.
- Torreja, a corn-flour fritter, and cancha (toasted corn).
- Rocoto or chilli, which gives the dish its name.
You will find it at stalls in the centre and in many picanterías during the festival. It is heavy, so if you have just arrived at altitude, share one. If you do not eat guinea pig, ask first, as it usually comes on the same plate.
Cusco festivals in June: Corpus Christi and Inti Raymi
Corpus Christi opens Cusco’s festival season, which peaks on 24 June with Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun, whose main ceremony takes place on the esplanade of Sacsayhuamán. June is also the city’s anniversary month, with parades and dances on several dates.

Weather, altitude and what to bring
Late May and June are the dry season: sunny days and clear skies with strong midday sun, but cold nights and early mornings, sometimes close to 0 °C (32 °F).
- Layers: a warm jacket for morning and evening, something light for midday.
- Sun protection: hat, sunscreen and sunglasses; there is almost no shade on the square.
- Water and snacks, because leaving the crowd to buy something is hard work.
- Comfortable shoes for standing for a long time on stone.
Cusco sits at about 3,400 m (11,150 ft). If you fly in the day before the festival, breathlessness and fatigue can hit exactly when you most want to be out. Ideally arrive two or three days early, or spend your first nights in the lower Sacred Valley. Read our guide to altitude sickness in Cusco before you go.
Getting around at Corpus: airport, trains and road closures
The festival coincides with the start of high season. Hotels, flights, trains and transport fill up earlier than at other times, and room rates usually rise. To get around without stress:
- Book your hotel weeks ahead, especially if you want to stay near the Plaza de Armas.
- Book your airport pickup with your flight number. A private Cusco airport transfer saves you queues and haggling at arrivals on busy days. More in our Cusco airport guide.
- Plan around road closures. On procession day the Plaza de Armas and several streets in the historic centre are closed to traffic, and traffic around them is slow. If your hotel is in that area, your pickup may be at the nearest open street: the driver will tell you where on WhatsApp and help with your luggage. Allow extra time to reach the airport or the station.
- Line up your Machu Picchu train. If your train leaves from Poroy (20–40 minutes from Cusco) or Ollantaytambo (approx. 1.5–2 hours by road), book the transfer to Poroy station or the Cusco to Ollantaytambo station transfer in advance, timed to your departure.

Step by step: how to enjoy Corpus Christi Thursday
- Eat a good breakfast and arrive early at the Plaza de Armas: the best spots, near the Cathedral and along the edges of the square, go quickly.
- Pick your viewpoint. From the edge of the square you see the litters pass up close; from the balcony of a restaurant or café under the arcades you get the overview, but you usually need to order or book.
- Agree a meeting point with your group in case you get separated in the crowd.
- Go back to the Cathedral later in the week to see the images in peace.
Don’t plan long excursions for the Thursday itself: getting out and back with the streets closed is slow. Keep another day for the private Cusco city tour and the Sacred Valley tour.
Tips and mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring your belongings. Crowds attract pickpockets: wear your backpack on your front, keep your phone in an inside pocket and carry little cash. Leave your passport in the hotel safe and carry a copy. More in our guide on whether Cusco is safe.
- Disrespectful photography. This is a religious celebration: no flash inside the Cathedral or churches, ask before taking close-up portraits of bearers or families, stay out of the procession route and do not fly drones over the crowd.
- Waiting for a taxi on the square. With the streets closed it cannot reach you; walk to an open street or have your pickup arranged.
- Booking everything last minute. Hotels, trains and transfers for late May and June sell out sooner.
